An isolated queen's pawn is not simply a weak pawn. Its real cost is the square immediately in front of it, which no pawn can ever guard again, and which becomes a permanent home for an enemy knight. Teichmann accepts the isolated d5-pawn, Capablanca puts a knight on d4 and never lets it be dislodged, and the pawn's other liability appears too: the light-squared bishop that has to live behind it. Take one idea into your games, when you face an isolated pawn, do not besiege the pawn, occupy the square in front of it.
The square in front of an isolated pawn cannot be attacked by any pawn. A knight there is untouchable, stops the pawn advancing, and radiates in every direction.
Black's pawn on d5 stands on a light square, so the light-squared bishop is permanently obstructed by the very pawn it must defend.
Against an isolated pawn, trade the attacking pieces and keep the blockading ones. Every exchange makes the pawn weaker and the square stronger.

When Teichmann played 12...c5 and the pawns came off, he was left with an isolated pawn on d5. That structure is not automatically bad, it gives space and it can generate piece activity, which is why strong players accept it all the time. What kills it here is Capablanca's method. He does not pile up on the pawn, he takes the square in front of it. After 18.Nd4 the knight is untouchable, because no black pawn will ever attack d4 again, and from there it eyes f5, c6, e6 and b5 all at once. The pawn is now permanently fixed on a light square, which means Black's light-squared bishop is permanently obstructed by its own pawn. Every exchange Capablanca allows removes an attacker and leaves the blockade intact, and by move thirty the pawn has become the entire game. In your games, meet an isolated pawn by occupying the square in front of it, then trade pieces and let the structure decide.
Capablanca opens with a Queen's Gambit setup and slips in the useful 7.Rc1, a waiting move that asks Black to commit his problem piece, the light-squared bishop, before White commits anything. After 8.cxd5 exd5 the bishop is already unhappy behind a pawn on a light square. Teichmann then plays 12...c5, seeking freedom, and after 13.dxc5 Nxc5 the d-pawn is isolated. From that moment there is only one plan worth having, and Capablanca plays it exactly.
The pawns have come off in the centre and Black's d5-pawn now stands alone, with no friendly pawn on the c- or e-file to support it. Material is level. Most players start by attacking the pawn, and that is not the strongest idea. Stop and assess before you read on.
Black has an isolated pawn on d5. What is White's most valuable target, and why is it not the pawn?
Ask which square in Black's position can never be defended by a pawn again, and which white piece would love to live there. Think, then reveal.
The plan against an isolated pawn has three steps and Capablanca performs all of them. First he blockades, 18.Nd4 puts a knight on the one square the pawn can never challenge, which both stops any advance and gives the knight a permanent home. Second he trades, the queens come off with 18...Qxe2 19.Ncxe2, and the rooks follow, because every exchange removes a defender of the isolani while the blockading knight stays exactly where it is. Third he collects, the knight tours to f5 and e6, the dark squares around Black's king weaken, 23.Bxh6 wins a pawn, and by the time the last rooks leave the board the position is technically decided. In your games, follow the same order, blockade first, exchange second, and only then attack, because a pawn you cannot advance and cannot defend eventually falls on its own.
The queens are about to leave the board and the isolated pawn is fixed on d5. Every white piece is developed and there is one square that will decide the game. It is not occupied yet.
White to play. Where does the knight belong, and why can it never be driven away?
18.Nd4, the blockading square. Black no longer has a c-pawn or an e-pawn, so d4 can never be attacked by a pawn again, which makes the knight a permanent resident rather than a visitor. From d4 it does three jobs at once: it stops d5-d4 forever, it covers f5, e6, c6 and b5, and it stares at a pawn that Black must keep defending. This is the difference between playing against a weak pawn and playing against the structure that created it. Notice that Capablanca is happy to exchange queens on the very next move, because trading pieces helps the blockader and hurts the blockaded. In your games, find the square in front of the isolated pawn, put a knight on it, and then start trading.
From the blockade the knight goes to work. 21.Nf5 hits the bishop and forces further exchanges, and once the dark squares around Black's king are loose 23.Bxh6 simply wins a pawn. The isolated pawn has not yet been captured and it has already cost Teichmann the game, because every black piece has spent the middlegame babysitting it.
The finish is a clean technical conversion. The last rooks come off, and what remains is a bishop ending in which Black's bishop is still obstructed by its own pawn and White's king walks in via e3 and d3. By move 38 the position is over. Carry the method into your games, the square in front of an isolated pawn is worth more than the pawn, so take the square and let the exchanges do the rest.
The rule: that square can never be attacked by a pawn, so a knight there is permanent. In this game: 18.Nd4 fixed the d5-pawn for the rest of the game. In your games: occupy the square before you attack the pawn.
The rule: exchanges favour the side playing against the isolani, because they remove its attacking potential. In this game: Capablanca traded queens and rooks and kept the blockading knight. In your games: swap the attackers, keep the blockader.
The rule: the pawn sits on one colour and obstructs the bishop of that colour. In this game: Black's light-squared bishop was blocked by its own d5-pawn all game. In your games: note which bishop the enemy pawn structure ruins.
The rule: a knight on a permanent central square attacks in every direction while doing its defensive job. In this game: the d4-knight covered f5, e6, c6 and b5. In your games: a blockader should also be an attacker.
The rule: an isolated pawn gives space and activity, and it only becomes weak once the position simplifies. In this game: Teichmann never generated the activity it was meant to buy. In your games: if you own the isolani, play fast and keep pieces on.
Because a pawn that can advance is dangerous and a pawn that cannot advance is a permanent liability. The blockading knight stops it dead, cannot be driven away by a pawn, and attacks in all directions from a central square. Attacking the pawn directly usually just ties your own pieces down too.
Black has no c-pawn and no e-pawn after the exchanges, and those are the only pawns that could ever attack d4. Once they are gone the square belongs to White permanently, which is exactly what turns a temporary blockade into a structural advantage.
Because the isolated pawn's compensation is activity, and activity needs pieces. Each exchange removes some of Black's attacking potential while leaving the weak pawn and the strong square exactly as they were. This is why the side playing against an isolani trades and the side holding it avoids trades.
The d5-pawn stands on a light square, and it is a pawn Black cannot move. His light-squared bishop is therefore permanently obstructed by the pawn it is obliged to defend, which is the classic bad bishop, hemmed in by its own structure.
No, and it is worth saying clearly. It grants extra space and open files for the pieces, and strong players take it on purpose. It becomes a liability only when the blockade is established and the pieces come off, which is the whole story of this game.
